Dr. Lisa Bobby
I think there are two main reasons that people seek pre-marital counseling.
- Conscientious and Proactive
- In love, but feel they need work
Seeking Pre-Marital Counseling: Proactive
First, there are some couples that are very conscientious and proactive. They want to do everything right.
They take marriage very seriously. Those types of couples often see pre-marital counseling as something that must be done.
Seeking Pre-Marital Counseling: Safety
They will take a good class and learn what they need to know in order to keep their marriage safe.
They will look for good pre-marital counseling classes that have communication components, information on how to manage conflict and also particular training on how to come to agreement around major aspects of marriage, like
- Parenting
- Housework
- Finances
That’s one type.
Seeking Pre-Marital Counseling: Work To Be Done
Another type of couple seeks out pre-marital counseling.
They know they love each other. They know that they want to get married, but they feel like they have some things to work out first.
Maybe they do have a little bit of conflict in their relationship or some points of friction and they want to do the wise thing, which is to get that resolved before marriage so that it doesn’t cause problems down the road.
