By the age of twenty-two, Jackie Warner was inspired to pursue a career in fitness and nutrition after training a few close friends with dramatic life-changing results. Within a year, Jackie opened her first health center, Lift. The revolutionary fitness facility was the first health club in Southern California to accept health insurance for exercise.
From 2004 to 2009, Jackie owned and operated her next gym, Sky Sport & Spa. Employing Jackie’s complete approach to fitness, Sky Sport was the nation’s premiere full service health and medical practice. Although frequented by fitness aficionados for years, Sky Sport was introduced to the rest of the world on Jackie’s hit television show, Bravo’s Work Out.
She returned to television in 2010 in the Bravo show, Thintervention with Jackie Warner. Hailed by critics, the premier gave the network its best ratings ever for a Monday.
Jackie is one of the world’s most sought-after fitness experts by media and consumers alike. She is a regular contributor to The Huffington Post, Fitness Rx and Fitness magazine, and she wrote the New York Times bestseller, This is Why You’re Fat (and How to Get Thin Forever), and stars in several bestselling DVDs.
Jackie is the current face of a health and wellness campaign called Fit in Your Skin and is the national spokesperson for Eggs of Australia.
To help people take back further control of their lives, Jackie created “Eat.Move.Believe.”, a new online fitness and wellness center. This new program will provide workouts, healthy recipes and fitness, nutrition and lifestyle tips.

_____
Jackie Warner
(3:58): Hi. Thank you for having me.
(4:08): As Intersections’ mission is holistic, it includes personal empowerment and wellness coaching and consultations with a registered dietitian. I’m fascinated by insights regarding proactively working towards health and wellness goals.
Jackie Warner, before exploring the insights shared in your book, why don’t you share with our listeners what prompted you to write this book in the first place.
Jackie Warner
(4:28): Honestly, I’ve been certified and have owned gyms since I was 30. It’s been 12 years. I’m 42.
I had a lot of information such as tricks of the trade, secrets and things that were unique to my world. They are things that I’ve trademarked in my business that I really wanted to share with people.
You have to understand that when the TV show Work Out came to me, it brought me an audience beyond thousands. It was literally millions of people.
I got emails and questions. People would come up to me. They all had the same kind of questions. How do you lose weight? How do you keep it off? When you lose weight, how do you not plateau? These were some of the common questions.
As I was writing the book with my ideas and insights, everything would go to, “This is why you’re fat, and how to get thin forever.” That’s what I titled the book because it was so appropriate.
There are three factors that are making America fat. I wrote about those three factors, what causes people to be overweight and how to cure yourself from that disorder. That’s what it is.

Overcomplicated Diets: Drop Them!
(5:47): How interesting. In your book, you mention three simple rules. I’d like to share them one by one with our listeners and have you explain them.
The first rule you share is no overcomplicated diets or routines. Tell us about that.
Jackie Warner
(6:05): I just did a very popular morning talk show on Saturday. We were talking about New Year’s resolutions.
They said, “Why do people gain weight? Why do they set goals and then break their goals after the New Year?”
The biggest roadblock is trying to overachieve, such as setting a high weight-loss goal as well as getting into a complicated book, diet and fitness routine. You have to simplify it.
Elaborating on Overcomplicated Diets: Drop Them!
______
Cheat Meals: Indulge Twice!
(8:16): That’s excellent. Your second simple rule is that deprivation doesn’t work. You mentioned that in terms of keeping your foods and adding foods on top of that.
Is there anything else that you wanted to add about that second rule of deprivation not working?
Jackie Warner
(8:33): I’m the only fitness professional that allows you two cheat meals. I’m the only one who allows that.
Elaborating on Cheat Meals: Indulge Twice!

Intense Workouts Can Be Short
(10:19): We’re going to go a little bit into that again. I want to jump into the last of the three simple rules that you have in your book. It dovetails with what you’re saying.
It is to live with intensity. Can you tell our listeners about that and how that relates to the whole plan?
Jackie Warner
(10:37): It’s interesting. People who work out with intensity live with intensity.
I can tell how a person behaves out in the world, if they’re an Alpha personality or if they’re not, and how they perform at work by how they start training with me.
Living with intensity means that it’s not how long, it’s how strong.
Elaborating on Intense Workouts Can Be Short.

_____
Two-Week Jumpstart to Weight Loss
(12:25): We’re talking about releasing chemicals that affect your whole life, very holistically.
It’s making that commitment to work out with intensity for a finite period of time and then that reverberates. That’s high impact.
In your book, you mention that you advocate what you call a five plus two eating plan, which you discussed earlier. That’s initiated by a two-week jumpstart. Can you tell us how that works together?
Jackie Warner
(12:59): Everyone loves the two-week jumpstart. I did touch upon that.
That two-week jumpstart is simply adding foods to your existing diet. You will lose weight on that two-week jumpstart.
Let me tell you what the two-week jumpstart does. You’re adding foods that are hormone balancing.
Elaborating on Two-Week Jumpstart to Weight Loss.

_____
Food Journal: It’s Important!
(15:25): I know in your book that you have a great deal of information about that as well regarding sugar addiction. You lay out the foods, which is very helpful. It is very concrete in terms of foods that would be five grams or less of sugar. You list the foods for the jumpstart. That’s very helpful.
In our wellness coaching, we ask our clients to maintain a daily food and activity log. I noticed that your book, likewise, guides readers to keep a food journal.
Given your extensive experience, share with our listeners your reasoning behind this.
Jackie Warner
(16:03): I ask people to keep a food journal initially. You do not always have to do this. This is in the initial stages.
It’s very important to keep a workout journal as well.
First, there is accountability. It’s like having a personal trainer or nutritionist there to guide you. You have accountability. You see and track what you’re doing.
Elaborating on Food Journal: It’s Important!
_____
Holiday Meals: Curb Your Appetite
(17:35): Your book has several great, practical tips regarding grocery shopping and eating out. Can you share two or three of those with us?
Jackie Warner
(17:47): Yes. I have a little trick for during the holidays. This took me some time to learn. We all have a lot of holiday parties.
First, always eat your dinner before going to a holiday party. It’s key.
Elaborating on Holiday Meals: Curb Your Appetite.
_____
Small Goals Are Attainable
(20:10): Okay. That’s very strategic. This is fascinating. You’ve developed a mind-body practice, which you’re termed “MetaPhysiques.”
I’m going to quote from your book. “Long before I developed MetaPhysiques, I knew I had its power; a power that I practiced. I could change the way people acted around me. I could change the outcome of certain events. I could achieve anything I put my mind to.
I understood at a very basic level that my thoughts and the energy that emanated from those thoughts could move mountains or start fires. I simply had to choose which to do. Every one of you has that same power. You can do things you never thought you could do.
You will create the body you want starting with your own personal dialogue about yourself. Thoughts and feelings turn into actions and actions into reality.”
I enjoyed learning about MetaPhysiques in your book. It strikes me as a very empowering practice. Can you briefly explain MetaPhysiques to our listeners?
Jackie Warner
(21:26): That particular chapter took me an hour and a half to write. I was obviously incredibly passionate about that particular chapter.
I know how my life has changed. I know that I couldn’t have achieved anything that I have achieved now without controlling my body and being physically strong.
That strength carries into the inner mind. It’s very important.
Elaborating on Small Goals are Attainable.

_____
Life Makeover: Be Happy
(27:03): That’s great. Can you share with our listeners one of your favorite success stories among all of the clients you’ve worked with in the last several years?
Jackie Warner
(27:19): That’s an easy one. It’s the reason I got into this industry. I owned businesses before this industry that weren’t related to fitness at all. I started late in the game.
I worked for Warner Brothers television for many years. I didn’t really have a passion for what I was doing anymore. I started taking clients on. I got certified at 30.
I started taking on a couple of clients. One of my first clients was a very high-powered, well-known executive in Los Angeles.
On the surface, it looked like she had everything. She had money. She had power. She always had a hot boyfriend on her arm.
She was a complete mess. She was an alcoholic. Her relationships were abusive. She hated her job. She hated herself.
Through about three to four months of working together, she completely changed her life.
Elaborating on Life Makeover: Be Happy.
_____
(30:16): Your passion shows through. Jackie, I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts with us. They’ve been really insightful and interesting. Is there any last thought or take-home message that you’d like to leave our listeners with?
Jackie Warner
(30:33): For people who are really overweight, I want to speak to you.
It’s not your fault. I say this in the opening chapter. It’s not your fault for being fat. It’s your fault for staying fat. I say that with love.
This is why. There are a couple of small things that you can do to take control. The food industry conspires to make us overweight in this country.
Once you learn that they’re not your friend, that they’re to be watched, that you need to take control of the nutrients that you put in your body and that you need to be a smart consumer then you will naturally lose weight.
You will not be carrying that around anymore. You have to take control of it.
You have to watch your calorie and sugar intake. You have to really watch that food industry and not believe the deceptive labeling that they give us.
I want to tell this to people, especially over the holidays as they’re looking at foods more closely.
(31:39): That’s excellent. It’s about really being proactive. I think that comes from a place of empowerment. I love that.
I’d like to thank Jackie Warner for joining us today. It’s been an absolute pleasure. Once again, if you’d like to learn more about the insights that Jackie has been sharing with us today, her book is entitled This is Why You’re Fat (And How to Get Thin Forever).
