Millennial Voters on the Rise!

Jasbina Ahluwalia asks Toby Chaudhuri, Co-Founder and CSO of SocialxDesign:: It is almost seeded in the design concepts that are coming out of the Bay Area and Silicon Valley and marrying that with what’s been done in the past, doing it in a whole different way. That is very interesting.

Given your experience and expertise, you must have some perspectives about the impact of Narendra Modi’s election on Indo-US relations. Tell us about that.

That’s a good segue. A lot of the work that we were doing with the White House, and certainly what we’re doing with my company, is all about how we confront the complex challenges of society that are too big to handle. They’re too complicated.

Millennial Voters in India

This requires a unique approach to tackle those challenges. What we just saw happen in India is almost becoming a cliché to say this. It’s a historic election.

More voters went to the polls in India than has ever happened in any democratic experiment in the history of humankind.

In that, you had an extraordinary number of millennial voters.

Millennial Voters: Rise of a Generation

There’s one other big trend that’s happening besides diversity around the world. We’re seeing the rise of a new generation, both in the US and India.

There are more voters under the age of 35 in India than in any other country that we’ve ever seen.

Millennial Voters: What Are They Saying

It’s important to take a step back and look at what the voters are saying in India.

• Clearly, there was a mandate for economic growth.
• Clearly, there was a mandate from the voters saying that, not only do they want a change in direction, but they want to see corruption tampered back.
• They want to see more competence in their leadership.

It’s also important to realize that Narendra Modi won with an overwhelming majority of parliamentary support. He won with about a third of the actual popular vote.

There is probably about 60% to 70% of the country that voted against him. Still, this is an extraordinary moment in India.

Millennial Voters Looking For Change

Now, all of a sudden, there is an opportunity to shape the country in a way that it hasn’t before. It will be interesting to see how this same electorate holds this leadership’s feet to the fire and creates accountability for both changes.

That’s really what the time is demanding for India right now, not only for the region, but also global because of its position on the globe.
