Being Empowered: Make the Change
Jasbina Ahluwalia asks Rebecca Grado, co-author of Taming Your Alpha Bitch: How to Be Fierce and Feminine (and Get Everything You Want!): Those are some wonderful analogies. I found the words you used in the book very compelling.
You make an insightful distinction between wielding force on the one hand and then embodying power. I think you’ve already spoken to this. Tell us about that distinction.
Like you said, it’s not a matter of being submissive but being empowered.

Being Empowered: Don’t Wield Power
It’s almost like we’ve fallen into this misbelief that, unless we’re wielding that power, sword in hand, slaying and dominating the people around us, if we’re not that then we’re weak and submissive.
We don’t want to revert back to the fifties apron-clad woman. We’re not going to be told what to do.
Being Empowered: Not About Submission
But there’s a great difference between being submissive and wielding power.
There is a third option available here to us. That is embodying our true power.
Being Empowered: True Power
True power is very quiet. It’s centered. It’s not that loud, overbearing, brash person who is talking over everyone else.
When you think of true power, think of the great leaders like Gandhi or Martin Luther King. They’re quiet but boy do they garner respect. All eyes are on them.
We’re trying to move back towards an embodied power within us.
Being Empowered: Within All Women
It’s within all women. Remember to tap into that. We don’t need to lead with forcefulness. We can actually lead with true power.
That will bring all the things that we truly desire, especially in relationships. It will bring the respect. It will bring the admiration. It will bring all of the things that we want forward in the people around us.
Being Empowered: All Relationships
This is not just in our intimate relationships but with our co-workers and other people around us.
Being Empowered: Real-Life Experience
I personally see this on a day-to-day basis.
When I’m being forceful and demanding, people back away from me. I don’t get the things I want.
Yet, when I’m speaking with kindness, gentleness and true reverence to others, it’s like they move forward.
They say, “How can I help you get to your goals? How can I give you the things you want in life?”
We don’t have to work so hard as women. This is the true message of the book.
We just have to work smarter and realize that, when we tap into that true power that is within each of us, life is our oyster. It’s right there waiting for us.
